About a year ago I was in an all-staff meeting (known here as Inservice) and throwing a small "hissy fit" over our yearly festival that we put on for little kids. Why was I throwing such a hissy fit? Upper staff wanted to cut out the Halloween part of it so that church-goers would be more inclined to bring their children. And I Freaked Out.
Little background here: I'm not religious, and I LOVE Halloween (It might just be my favorite holiday). So when upper staff asked "does anyone have anything to say?" I raised my hand. And, unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that I went into bitch-mode. I told them that it wasn't fair to cut out one whole section of the holiday just to be more "inclusive" to the religious community. The conversation (it wasn't an argument, really) went back and forth for a while until someone decided we should have a festival with two parts, a Harvest side and a Halloween side.
Mission accomplished.
Except that meant twice as much work for staff as far as set-up and tear-down was concerned. A couple of staff members are starting to look at me with that sarcastic, "thanks, Julie" look, since we have decided to once again have the double festival. I'm stoked, since I'm working on the Halloween side again. One of the girls who works in my building has some brilliant ideas, I just can't wait to start setting up.
This brings me to my dilemma. I don't know what to be for Halloween. Last year I was a cruddy vampire/pale person with black eyes/lips. I wanted to be a werewolf this year, and I have all the supplies, but now I really want a mask like this:

It has working jaw movements, follow-eye effect, is super awesome... and also VERY expensive (dear gods, do you know how much fake fur costs?!). Also, the artists isn't taking commissions till next year, so I wont have the chance to get one for a while. Hopefully in time for next Halloween...
My other option is just painting my face to resemble a Day of the Dead Skull. It looks beautiful and I have a friend who is really good at makeup, so she might help me.
So... anyone have any suggestions?

Julie,
ReplyDeleteI know it means more work- but you brought great points to the discussion - being inclusive shouldn't have to mean choosing which side to include and excluding the other - being able to allow for both is true diversity and inclusivity, and you were a big part of that!
As for Halloween? I think you should go as Pikachu - with your own poke ball
Tyler,
ReplyDeleteI have a Raichu costume, but it's at home up in Folsom and I already took my weekend away. Maybe next year. I think its going to come down to who is willing to do my face paint for me and what they are willing to do.
Rock on with the face paint, that sounds awesome. I'd have thrown a fit about the lack of Halloween festivities too— I'm with you there!
